Petra International Conference on Sustainable Cities and Regions (PICSCAR) 2024 : Toward Sustainable Cities and Regions: Growth - Regeneration - Innovation
Background
The development of new cities in green areas, especially in suburban areas and other major urban agglomerations in Indonesia, has directly and indirectly impacts urban sustainability, the existence of local communities, local cultures, and urban governance. Ineffective urban management, weak commitments to principles and planning, and low concern for cultural heritage have resulted in negative impacts on various aspects such as economy, environment, culture, and diverse spatial arrangements. Some of these impacts include large-scale displacement of farmers, loss of agricultural land, demolition of settlements, and socioeconomic segregation, which certainly affect many areas.
The concept of sustainable cities and regions is at the core of the global development agenda, which aims to address the challenges posed by increasing urbanization, environmental degradation, and socioeconomic disparities. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which aims to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban areas, highlights the importance of holistic solutions that consider economic, social, and environmental sustainability, becoming increasingly relevant and receiving attention among policymakers, city managers, developers, and non-governmental organizations. Future significant challenges require multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies involving many parties. The existence of various best practices in several countries in maintaining, developing, and monitoring urban sustainability wisely, accompanied by digital scientific data, is crucial to be developed by city managers.
Multi and transdisciplinary research that combines studies of urban development, urbanization and its impacts, sustainable social transformations, tradition evolving into modernity, and cultural preservation becomes very important. Research that has produced studies from the perspective of urban development, urban growth, and urban society, as well as the integration of cross-disciplinary scientific studies, is essential for stakeholders in planning urban sustainability. Scientific meetings involving city managers, academics, industry, and the community are expected to strengthen inclusive and sustainable communities and directly impact sustainable cities and communities.
